WHAT CAN I STUDY ?

UNDERGRADUATE AND POSTGRADUATE COURSES

Irish Higher education institutions offer degrees at ordinary and Honours Bachelors, Masters and Doctorate levels and undergraduate and postgraduate diplomas over a full range of disciplines… More precisely, you can study on management, in business, all types of art, computer science, psychology, law, design and many other fields.

WHAT IS A POSTGRADUATE ?

A postgraduate is a student who has successfully completed an undergraduate degree level course at a college or university and is undertaking further study at a more advanced level.

WHAT IS A POSTGRADUATE COURSE ?

A postgraduate course is typically one year’s duration full time or it can take two years to complete part-time. A postgraduate diploma, postgraduate degree or Master’s degree offers the student an advanced level of education in their chosen area of study.

The course content is designed to build on the knowledge obtained at undergraduate degree level. Often the course content is more practical in nature to better prepare the student with the skills they will need in the workplace. Completing postgraduate studies helps students further their career prospects and deepen their understanding of their area of study.

WHAT IS AN UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE ?

Undergraduate degrees are a form of post-secondary (after high school) education that many students pursue to further their academic and professional pursuits. You can take many different career paths after high school graduation, but pursuing an undergraduate degree can open up career opportunities tailored to your talents and interests.

ERASMUS

Erasmus – the EU’s flagship education programme – enables 200,000 students to study abroad each year. Students from the EU, EEA and Turkey have a straightforward route to spend between three and twelve months studying in an Irish higher education institution as part of their course.

Erasmus is part of the EU’s Lifelong Learning Programme and has expanded since 2007 to include teacher and staff mobility. Since the programme began in 1987, almost two million students have participated in semester or year long exchanges to broaden both their studies and cultural experiences.

Successful applicants for the exchange programme receive a study grant toward the costs and do not pay fees at their chosen institution. Courses undertaken in Ireland are recognised within the student’s final degree award under the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). Institutions in 31 countries participate in the programme and there are variations in the applications process between them. We advise you to contact your college’s International Office for advice.

Erasmus can also support students who want to spend periods on work placement in Ireland.
