IRP/GNIB

The GNIB has been renamed IRP (Irish Residence Permit). However, it is still used as GNIB in most places. GNIB is an abbreviation for Garda National Immigration Bureau. It is a mechanism for non-EU/EEA nationals who are staying in Ireland for more than 90 days.

Non-EU/EEA nationals must register with GNIB within 90 days of arrival in Ireland. You will need to make an appointment to do so. After you have been registered, you will be granted a GNIB card, which you must keep with you at all times as confirmation of your immigration status. The card also includes your photograph, which can be used as identification.

It is important to note that GNIB registration does not give you permission to work in Ireland. If you want to work in Ireland, you must first obtain a work visa. If you need to renew your GNIB registration, you should do so at least two weeks before the expiration date of your existing registration. You can make your second GNIB appointment online by visiting the GNIB website.

Failure to register with GNIB or to renew your registration can result in fines, deportation, or other legal consequences, so it is important to make sure you are in compliance with the GNIB requirements if you are a non-EU/EEA national staying in Ireland for more than 90 days.

How to Get a GNIB Appointment?

First of all, as Education State, we take our students’ GNIB appointments. If you are not our student and you have problems with this, you can ask for help in our Dublin office 🙂

  • To book a GNIB appointment, you must call 1800 800630 on your Irish phone line between 09:00 and 17:00. It may take a long time to connect to the operator due to the current density, so we ask you to wait patiently to connect.
  • After connecting to the person in charge, what you need to say is “I want to book my first GNIB appointment.”
  • You don’t have to worry while talking because people on the phone know that you are a foreigner. For this reason, they can talk to you patiently for a long time.

Appointment Call

The questions that the person in charge will ask you are as follows:

  • Name Surname
  • E-mail Address
  • Your nationality
  • Your date of birth
  • Your Passport Number

Then, you are told the closest date and time. A notification is sent to your e-mail during the day. The operator asks you to spell the letters one by one so that there is no mistake. You can get support from the image below to help you with spelling.
